Once you know how to change the author of a post in WordPress, it’s easy to attribute articles to different people without having to copy and paste posts from a different account. Here’s what you need to do:
Check That the Author Exists on Your WordPress Site
Before you change any authors on your site, you’ll want to check that they exist on your official list of WordPress users. If they do, then you can follow the instructions listed in this article. If they don’t, you’ll need to add them as new users, which we explain at the end of the post.
To check the official users list, log into your WordPress Dashboard and click Users on the sidebar. Doing this will bring up information about all your users, including their names, emails, roles and the number of posts attributed to them.
Change The Author Name In Classic Editor
If you are using WordPress’s Classic Editor, first navigate to the page where you want to change the author’s name.
If the page does not display the Author panel, click Screen Options, and then check the Author box. Once you check this box, the Author panel will appear next to the post.
Click the drop-down menu to select an author from the available list. Select the author you want to attribute the post to and click Update to save and publish your selection.
Other Editing Options
WordPress being WordPress, there are several other methods you can use to change the attributed author on your posts.
The first is to perform a Quick Edit. To do this, go to your Dashboard and click Posts >> All Posts. On the following screen, you’ll see a list of post titles along with authors, categories, and tags. Click the Quick Edit link to bring up a new box that lets you adjust post parameters.
In the box, click the drop-down menu for changing the author. Change the author and then click Update to save the changes.
You can also change the author from the Gutenberg Block Editor. To do this, open the page requiring the name change and then on the post edit screen click Post >> Status & visibility. In the Status & visibility submenu, you’ll see another Author drop-down menu. Click this, select the author you want to attribute to the post and click Update.
How To Add A User
Adding new users to a WordPress site is easy. Go to Users >> Add New in your WordPress Dashboard. Then fill out the form, adding the user’s name, email, first name, last name, website, and password. If you want to generate a strong password for the user, you can click the “generate password” option. If the user has security concerns, you can also automatically send them an email about their new account and how to change their password at a later date.
